Q: How much soap do I use in the tank? And is tap water ok?
A: We recommend a 10:1 ratio of water to soap. Yes, tap water is all we ever use in the cleaning tank. Using other soaps and solvents voids the warranty, as some can corrode parts of the machine, so we recommend using one of our ultrasonic soaps specially designed for your cleaning needs.
Q: Do I need to rinse my parts after cleaning?
A: It depends on the next step for the part. If the part is going to coating, painting, anodizing or other surface treatments, yes, you should rinse in order to remove the microscopic layer of rust inhibitor left from the soap. To avoid water spots, use DI water for your rinse. However, if the part is going to more machining or assembly, then a rinse is not necessary. Keep in mind if you rinse the rust inhibitor off, untreated steel will flash rust. For long term storage of parts, you should use an RP (rust preventative) for your final step before storage.
Q: How often do I have to change the water?
A: Your ultrasonic cleaner will tell you when it’s time to change the solution; one day, the parts will need a longer cleaning cycle to get clean. This tells you the solution has reached its max capacity for contaminants, and the ultrasonic bubbles are struggling to get through and do their job.
Q: Will my parts flash-rust?
A: Our specialty ultrasonic soap has a built-in rust inhibitor to prevent flash rust. Parts will dry quickly and be protected when they come out of the water. Keep in mind if you rinse the rust inhibitor off, untreated steel will flash rust. For long term storage of parts you should use an RP (rust preventative) for your final step before storage.
Q: Is ultrasonics safe for my parts?
A: Ultrasound is safe on all solid surfaces (metals, plastics, ceramics and safe of rubber), as long as it is used appropriately for the specific material. All our machines come with timers that must be used so parts are removed after the required cleaning cycle time. We can help you determine the ideal cleaning time and water temperature for your particular parts. For example, aluminum will need a shorter cleaning cycle, cast iron will require a longer cleaning cycle, and steel falls in the middle. Brass and copper require a specialty soap with an ingredient to prevent color change. Pro Ultrasonics is so powerful that parts left in over a long period of time could cause some cosmetic alteration to some surfaces. The ultrasonic power can also be adjusted to a gentle cycle for more delicate materials.
